Working Rights and Social Integration(ESN Greece)

Adjusting to your new professional and social ecosystem in Greece requires navigating local labor laws and securing your federal employment credentials before signing any employment contract.

The Employment Gatekeeper: Securing Your AMKA

Whether you are an EU or Non-EU citizen, obtaining a local job or paid internship requires a National Social Security Number known as an AMKA (Arithmos Mitrou Koinonikis Asfalisis). Your tax number (AFM from Step 2) allows you to be taxed, but your AMKA legally permits you to be insured in the workforce.

You can initiate your social security registration digitally or verify your insurance status directly through the official Gov.gr National Social Security Portal (e-EFKA). Local employers are legally blocked from running your payroll until your valid AMKA is registered in their system.

Labor Regulations by Nationality:

- EU Students: You possess full, unrestricted labor rights. You can legally work full-time (up to 40 hours per week) in any commercial or corporate sector in Greece immediately upon arrival without requiring any additional work authorizations or work visas.
- Non-EU Students: Your student residence permit (from Step 7) grants you partial access to the local labor market but strictly limits your legal working hours to a maximum of 20 hours per week during active academic semesters. You are only permitted to transition into full-time seasonal employment during official university holiday breaks. Working beyond this 20-hour limit during semesters constitutes a serious violation of your student visa compliance.

Kickstarting Your Social Life & Community Integration

Navigating a new cultural environment can be challenging. To seamlessly adapt to Greek student life, participate in cultural exchanges, and find local housing support, your primary destination should be the official ESN Greece National Portal(https://esngreece.gr/). Connecting with your university’s local Erasmus Student Network (ESN) chapter allows you to sign up for structured integration events, academic orientation tours, and request a dedicated local student mentor through the official Buddy System program.
