Visa and Entry Requirements
This is the initial administrative filter. You must sort out your entry rights before booking flights, non-refundable accommodation, or packing your bags. The path is completely dual-track depending on your passport.
EU / EEA / Swiss Students: The Freedom of Movement Track
If you hold a passport or national ID card from an EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland, your entry process is frictionless.
- Entry Document: You do not need a visa. You can enter Greece using a valid National ID card or a Biometric Passport.
- Validity Check: Ensure your ID card or passport is valid for the entire duration of your planned stay.
The 90-Day Border Myth: While you can walk right through the EU border lane, remember that if your degree lasts longer than 3 months, you are legally required to register your presence with local authorities after arrival.
Non-EU Students: The National D-Visa Track
If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA, a National Long-Stay Visa (Type D) is strictly mandatory before you can legally cross the Greek border for studies. A standard tourist Schengen visa or visa-free tourist privilege (the 90-day rule) cannot be converted into a student status once you are inside Greece.
Timeline & Fees
- When to Apply: Start gathering documents 2 to 3 months before your program start date. Peak consulate season runs from July to September and bottlenecks are frequent.

- Application Fee: The standard National D-Visa application fee is approximately €90 to €180, depending on your nationality and the specific consulate.
The Core Requirement: Proof of Sufficient Funds
The Greek government wants absolute proof that you will not become a financial burden on the state.
- The Minimum Amount: You must legally prove you possess at least €400 to €600 per month. For a standard 12-month academic year, consulates strictly look for a total clear balance of at least €4,800 to €7,200.
- Acceptable Proof Formats:
- Personal Bank Statements: Original bank statements from the last 3 to 6 months showing a consistent, stable balance (one-time massive deposits right before the interview are highly scrutinized)
- Sponsorship/Parental Affidavit: A notarized affidavit signed by your parents or legal guardians stating they assume full financial responsibility for your living costs, accompanied by *their* bank statements and income tax forms (e.g., W-2 forms).
- Official Scholarship Letters: A certified letter from an approved institution showing your award details.
Complete Visa Document Checklist
You must present these documents in person at the nearest Greek Embassy or Consulate in your home country:
- Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay in Greece and have at least two blank pages.
- Official Acceptance Letter: Your enrollment letter issued by the Greek university, which must be certified by the Greek Ministry of Education.
- Proof of Course Payment: A receipt proving you have paid at least 50% (or the full first installment) of your tuition fees.
- Clean Criminal Record: An official police clearance certificate from your country of origin, legally translated into Greek or English and Apostilled.
- Official Medical Certificate: Issued by a recognized public or private health institution, proving you do not suffer from any infectious diseases that pose a risk to public health (according to WHO standards).
- Schengen Travel Health Insurance: A policy providing a minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency medical treatment and repatriation, valid for the initial entry period.
- Proof of Accommodation: A dormitory reservation or a preliminary rental intent agreement.
The Border Control Alert (2026/2027 Updates)
- The EES System: Note that European border controls utilize the fully digital Entry/Exit System (EES). Instead of ink stamps, your biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans) will be registered digitally at the Greek airport or border checkpoint.
- Carry Your Paperwork: Always keep copies of your university acceptance letter and your proof of funds in your carry-on luggage. Border officers can legally ask to see them at the passport control gate, even if you already have the visa sticker in your passport.
