Register for your Student Card (Diákigazolvány)
The Hungarian student card grants you legal access to deeply subsidized student discounts (up to 90% off) on transit, museums, and public services.
The 2-Step Application Process:
Step 1
Visit a Kormányablak: Go to any local government office known as a Kormányablak (Government Window) with your valid passport.
No appointment is needed, but pick a "NEK / Educational ID" ticket at the entrance. They will take your official photo for free and print out a NEK identifier sheet.
Step 2
Submit to your University: Take your NEK sheet directly to your university's student registrar office.
They will order your permanent plastic card from the central Educational Authority (Oktatási Hivatal).
Critical Time Gap (Do Not Get Fined!)The Permanent Card takes 1 to 3 months to arrive.
- The Solution: As soon as you complete Step 2, request a Temporary Student Certificate (Igazolás) on paper from your university. This sheet is valid for 60 days, completely free, and acts as your legal student card so you can buy discounted transport tickets immediately.
