Opening an Irish Bank Account
You will need a local bank account to pay rent, receive salaries from part-time jobs, and manage daily costs.
- Traditional Banks: Bank of Ireland or Allied Irish Banks (AIB). They require an in-person appointment and an official "Student Letter" with your local address from your university.
- Digital Alternatives (Fastest): Revolut or Money Jar are widely accepted in Ireland and allow you to get an Irish IBAN setup in minutes right from your smartphone.
For an international student, the most elegant, fastest and safest solution in Ireland is to open a Revolut account with an Irish IBAN.
While traditional banks (AIB and Bank of Ireland) are reliable, their bureaucracy is extremely slow: they require physical appointments weeks in advance and an official proof of address, which a newly arrived student does not have. Revolut solves all these problems in a matter of minutes.
The most recommended solution: Revolut (with Irish IBAN)
From 2023, all Revolut users in Ireland have been automatically migrated to the Irish branch (Revolut Bank UAB - Ireland Branch). This means that every student receives a local IBAN starting with the letters "IE".
Why is it the perfect solution for students?
- Maximum speed: The account is opened in less than 10 minutes directly from your smartphone.
- No geographical discrimination: It is legally recognized by all Irish employers for the payment of wages and by all utility companies or landlords for the payment of rent.
- Easy for Immigration (Non-EU): The Immigration Service (ISD) accepts Revolut account statements as proof of funds (the €10,000), provided that the statement is downloaded in official PDF format and is in the student's name.
- Zero costs: The Standard Plan is completely free and has no monthly administration fees (unlike traditional banks, unless you meet the student requirements).
What documents are required to open?
Unlike a physical bank where you need special university letters, at Revolut the process is completely digital:
1. For EU students: Only a clear photo of your Passport or Identity Card (bulletin) is required.
2. For Non-EU students (e.g. Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Brazil, USA, Singapore): An international Passport is mandatory. Sometimes the application may request a photo of your visa or college acceptance letter to validate long-term residency in Ireland.
