French Bank Account

In short: the French RIB is the key that unlocks 90% of the bureaucracy in France. Without a local bank account, every step becomes slower, more expensive and full of paper forms. Here's why:

1. Access FranceConnect

FranceConnect is the unique system through which you log in to the state's websites: CAF, impots.gouv, Ameli, etc.

The easiest way to connect is through "bank keys" - that is, your French bank.

2. Rent & Guarantees

Landlords and platforms like Studapart, Yugo, Nexty Studea, CROUS require payment of rent and guarantee only by SEPA transfer.

With a French IBAN, the money arrives instantly and you have automatic proof.

3. CAF assistance

CAF transfers your rent subsidy only to a bank account in France.

You cannot receive the money to a foreign account. Without a RIB, you lose up to €200-300/month.

4. CROUS & Utilities

University tuition, electricity, internet, telephone - all paid by SEPA direct debit.

Companies refuse foreign cards for direct debit. With a French RIB, it's done in 2 minutes online.

BoursoBank

BoursoBank (formerly known as Boursorama Banque) is the leader of online banks in France, officially recognized for 18 consecutive years as the cheapest bank in the country. As a subsidiary of the Société Générale group, it combines the security of a major financial institution with the extremely low fees of a 100% digital service.
Like Free Mobile in telecommunications, BoursoBank revolutionized the French banking market by eliminating management costs for current accounts.
The most popular bank cards (All are Visa)
All cards offered are free, with one mandatory condition: you must make at least one payment per month. Otherwise, a monthly penalty fee applies (between €5 and €9, depending on the card).

- Welcome (Free): Available without income conditions. Offers free payments in euros and foreign currency, making it ideal for students or users with moderate budgets.
- Ultim (Free): The most popular card, equivalent to a Visa Premier. It does not require a minimum income threshold upon opening, offers full travel insurance and free withdrawals from ATMs abroad (within the limit of 3 free foreign currency withdrawals per month).
- Metal (€9.90 / month): The premium option that includes unlimited foreign currency withdrawals anywhere in the world, extended insurance and access to airport lounges.

Financial services offered
Unlike a simple fintech application, BoursoBank is a complete bank and offers:

1. Regulated savings accounts: Livret A, LDDS or Matla retirement savings account.
2. Stock market investments: Opening securities accounts or equity savings plans (PEA) with zero commissions via the Boursomarkets platform.
3. Loans: Real estate loans or personal loans with some of the lowest interest rates in France.

Mandatory conditions for opening an account
To open a BoursoBank account as a foreign citizen resident in France, you must meet the following criteria:

- Be a tax resident in France.
- Already have an active bank account (with IBAN/RIB) opened in your name in the European Union.
- Provide a valid ID (Passport/ID card) and proof of address in France.

In addition, the bank frequently offers substantial welcome bonuses (often between €80 and €150) when opening your first account through referral links or periodic promotional codes.

Nickel

Nickel is an extremely popular alternative banking service in France, launched with the innovative concept of an “account for all” (compte pour tous). Unlike traditional banks or 100% online banks (such as BoursoBank), a Nickel account is not opened online or in a bank branch, but directly at newsstands and tobacconists (Buralistes) in just 5 minutes.
Its main advantage is total accessibility: the account is opened without income conditions and is also available to people in a situation of interdit bancaire (people with a banking ban in France).
Nickel card offer and rates
The system operates on the basis of a fixed basic fee of €25 per year, to which additional costs may be added depending on the type of card chosen:

- Nickel Classic (€25 / year): Standard account with a French IBAN/RIB and a classic Mastercard card. Payments in euros are free, but cash withdrawals cost (€1.50 from ATMs).
- Nickel Chrome (+€30 / year, i.e. €55 in total): Adds premium travel insurance (similar to Visa Premier) and eliminates fees for payments made in any currency in the world.
- Nickel Metal (+€80 / year, i.e. €105 in total): The top option with a stainless steel card. Includes completely free withdrawals from any ATM in the world and free cash deposits.

How does opening an account work?
The process is designed to be extremely simple and fast, without bureaucracy:

1. Buying the kit: Go to any of the more than 8,000 Point Nickel points (partner newsstands/tobacco shops). [1]
2. Scanning documents: You scan your identity document (voter or passport) and phone number on the dedicated electronic terminal in the store.
3. Immediate activation: You pay the €25 fee directly at the merchant, you immediately receive the physical Mastercard card and the PIN code via SMS. The IBAN is printed directly on the receipt.

Important advantages and limitations

|Major advantages | Limitations to consider |

| No overdraft risk: You cannot spend more than you have; zero penalty fees (agios). | No checks: You cannot deposit checks and you cannot request a checkbook (chéquier). |
| Cash deposit: You can deposit cash directly at the newsstand where you opened the account. | Transaction fees: Some basic transactions cost money (e.g. ATM withdrawals for basic cards). |
| Instant opening: No proof of income or translated employment contracts required. | No loans: Being a payment account, it does not offer real estate loans or authorized overdrafts (découvert). |

Société Générale

Société Générale is one of the largest and oldest traditional banks in France, founded in 1864. Unlike the previously discussed digital services (BoursoBank or Nickel), it operates according to the classic banking model: it offers a vast network of physical agents, dedicated banking advisors and a full range of complex financial products.

If you want to go straight to the Société Générale (SG) option, this is a solid choice for an international student, as they offer very cheap special packages aimed at young people, but the process requires a bit of attention to detail.
Here’s how their student offer works and the exact steps you need to follow:
Student offer: Sobrio Jeune Package
For students aged 18 to 24, the bank offers the Sobrio package at a symbolic price of €1 per month (or even €1 per year during promotions) for the first few years.

- What’s included: A current account with a French RIB, a Visa bank card (Classic or Evolution), full access to the L’Appli SG mobile app, and insurance in case of loss or theft of documents/keys/card.
- Welcome bonus: As a rule, if you open your account online or as part of the autumn campaigns, Société Générale offers a welcome bonus (between €60 and €100) directly to your account, after making your first card payments.
- International Option (Very useful): You can activate a special option for students that allows you to make payments and withdrawals completely free of charge (without exchange fees) when traveling outside the euro zone or when sending/receiving money from home.

Warning: The “Partner Schools” Trap
Before stepping foot in any agency, check on your faculty’s website or directly on campus if your university has a partnership signed with Société Générale.

- Many faculties and student dormitories (such as those in the CROUS network) have special promotional codes.
- These partnerships can bring you 2 years of total freedom, a dedicated English-speaking advisor and higher installation bonuses.

Required documents (Opening file)
As a traditional bank, they will carefully analyze your file. Prepare in digital or physical format:

1. Valid Romanian passport or identity card.
2. School certificate (Certificat de scolarité) or student card from the French university (it is mandatory proof that you have student status).
3. Proof of residence (Justificatif de domicile):
- If you live in a dormitory: A certificate of accommodation from the administration (Attestation de logement).
- If you live in a private rental: A recent energy bill (EDF) or internet.
- If you live temporarily with someone (Hébergé): A letter signed by the host (Attestation d'hébergé), a copy of the host's ID card and an invoice in their name.

How do you proceed practically?

- Online version (The simplest): Go directly to the Open a student account - SG page, fill out the form and upload your scanned documents. Validation usually takes a few working days, and the card will be mailed to your address in France.
- Agency version: If you have more complex documents (for example, you are temporarily staying), it is better to go to the nearest physical agency near your campus and ask for an appointment (un rendez-vous) to open a student account.
